SUMMARY:An EPIC YEAR for CICADAS (ZOOM)
DESCRIPTION:Approximately a trillion red-eyed flying cicadas will hatch in the U.S. this spring as two adjacent broods emerge from the ground. This double hit of cicadas has not happened since 1803 and Illinois will witness the action. Program is presented by cicada expert Dr. Gene Kritsky\, professor emeritus of biology at Mount  ST. Joseph University and the author of  A Tale of Two Broods: The Emergence of Broods XIII and XIX.  The program is cosponsored by the Friends of the Green Bay Trail\, the Glencoe Library\, and the Glencoe Sustainability Task Force. \nRegister for the Zoom meeting here.

DESCRIPTION:Doug Tallamy returns to share his Homegrown National Park Initiative. Tallamy\, author of Bringing Nature Home\,  call for action is to use public and private spaces to support and expand biodiversity. 83% of US. land is privately owned. He challenges property owners to select ecologically effective plants\, shrink lawn size and remove invasives in order to restore the needed diversity to offset the rapidly rising impacts of climate change and to create a Homegrown National Park. \nRegistration is required. \nThis program is sponsored by the Friends of the Green Bay Trail and the Glencoe Public Library.

SUMMARY:Not Your Mother's Garden
DESCRIPTION:Landscape designer Deborah Chud returns to take the audience on a photo tour of her highly unusual New Perennialist-inspired garden and describes the design principles underlying it. Many of the plants are unfamiliar—even to experienced and knowledgeable gardeners. These “new perennials” were all taken from a distinctive canon of plants\, and they exhibit the naturalistic qualities valued by the New Perennialist gardening movement. What’s new about new perennials and what can they do for you? Walk through her garden with her to find out. Presented in partnership with the Friends of the Green Bay Trail.  \nREGISTER HERE for this Zoom program.

SUMMARY:Water in a Time of Rapidly Changing Climate
DESCRIPTION:Reliable supplies of water are threatened by scarcity\, excess\, wild fluctuations between these extremes\, and pollution. In the Great Lakes region\, some communities enjoy ample supplies and others do not\, but they all face the “threat multiplier” of a rapidly changing climate. Kimberly Gray\, chair of the civil and environmental engineering department at Northwestern University\, will discuss how nature-based strategies can aid in our adaptation to climate change and to a range of water issues. SUMMARY:The Social Life of Trees
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fascinating presentation on the interrelationships between trees with Dr. Suzanne Simard. \nIn her book\, Finding the Mother Tree: Discovering the Wisdom of the Forest\, Dr. Simard’s research  reveals trees are more than timber or pulp  resources. Trees are interconnected via complex fungi connections that serve as social networks. They  communicate vulnerabilities\, learn\, adapt behaviors\, recognize neighboring trees\, and  contribute to forest resiliency.  It is through these underground networks that Mother Trees connect and sustain the forest community. \nDr. Simard is a professor of Forest Ecology at the University of British Columbia and a pioneer of plant communication and intelligence. Her work has influenced filmmakers (the Tree of Souls in James Cameron’s Avatar). and her TED talks have been viewed by more than 10 million people worldwide. The paperback edition of her book will be released on June 21st. \nMatt Evans\, Managing Ecologist for Chicago Botanic Garden’s woodlands\, will be the evening’s moderator. \nThis program is co-sponsored by the Friends of the Green Bay Trail with the Glencoe Public Library and Glencoe’s Sustainability Task Force. \nRegister here (required)

SUMMARY:Doug Tallamy and The Nature of Oaks
DESCRIPTION:Renowned insect ecologist Douglas Tallamy will discuss his newest book\, The Nature of Oaks: The Rich Ecology of Our Most Essential Native Trees. Oaks are long lived and support more life forms than any other North American genus.  From woodpeckers who collect and store hundreds of acorns for sustenance to birds\, bears\, insects and spiders.  Oak leaf litter supports creatures who reside in it\, and deters invasive plants and soil erosion.Tallamy will compare oaks to other popular tree species and the oak tree’s superior ability to support animal diversity and its substantial environmental contributions. \nThis program is cosponsored by the Friends of the Green Bay Trail with the Glencoe Public Library and the Glencoe Sustainability Task Force.  Please register for the program at https://bit.ly/3zlLzfm.
